From: "Scott E. Lasley" <lasleyse@wam.umd.edu>
Subject: DiskExpander 1.2
Here is Alysis' Disk Expander version 1.2 downloaded from the
Alysis Vendor area on Compuserve. from the Read Me file:
The Disk Expander is a system extension. Adding it to your Macintosh
System Folder will allow you to read and use files and applications
that have been compressed by More Disk Space. You will find that
applications are much smaller in compressed form and that they require
no extra time to launch. Compressed applications and compressed
document files behave exactly as you would expect them to. Even
multi-megabyte files will open without delay and without any disk
space overhead.

Enclosed is AutoBin. Autobin is a program based on dropshell that
will binhex any file dropped on top of it. Since I didn't write very
much of the actual code, included the source so other can benefit too.
(and hopefully modify it and make it better.)

This patcher does _not_ update the AutoDoubler Internal Compressor; to
update these files, obtain the AutoDoubler 2.0-> 2.0.1 updater, which
includes that patch.
Note: As this file is already internally compressed by Symantec, I have not
compressed it in any way, as no additional savings are gained.

From: Eric Shieh <eshieh@soda.berkeley.edu>
Subject: util/binary-pump.cpt.hqx
Date: Mon, 6 Dec 1993 12:38:03 -0800
Ever download a file, only to have it appear as a generic binary file?
If you transfer files with unix, IBM, or VAX systems frequently you've
probably experienced this once or twice. Normally, the solution is to
figure out the correct file type, and then use Resedit or some other
utility and manually change the file type and creator.
Binary Pump is a program which looks at file tags or name extensions in order
to convert them to the correct mac file type and creator. This program is very
easy and very quick to use--simply drag and drop and it's so fast you might
wonder if it ran at all! Binary Pump will also work for non-Drag and Drop
System 6.0.7 users.
Binary Pump is also very easy to customize and has several features which
allow the user to extract file tag information.

Hello,
Enclosed below is Howard Fukuda's excellent Desk Accessory
"BinHqx 1.02 DA'. Shareware $5. It dates 1990, but works
very fine with System 7. Handles both Encoding/Decoding BinHex,
plus, 'Join&Decode' and 'Segment' features.
By setting the 'I/O buffer size' to the maximum, it operates
VERY quickly. Works twice/threetimes faster than StuffIt's

Hope you enjoy it:

From: simula3@di.unito.it (Alex Rodella)
Subject: [*] ChunkJoiner 1.0
ChunkJoiner is a small utility that lets you join (concatenate)
any number of files in a single chunk. To use it, simply select
the files you want to join, and drag&drop them onto ChunkJoiner.
You will be asked the "type" and "creator" for the newly
created file. You will be also asked for the name of the
application which can open the resulting file; I have added
this because the Finder 7.x can read this name and show it
to the user if the application is not present.
ChunkJoiner works on any Macintosh, but it
**requires** System 7 or later.
Life is easier with a drag&drop interface.
Enjoy yourself and remember the shareware fee!

This is a compilation of the replies I received from Info-Mac by asking the
following question:
"I'm thinking of buying either Times Two or AutoDoubler. I have a Mac Classic
4/40 and I'd very much like to know if I'll experience noticeable performance
loss when these utilities compresses/decompresses in the background?"
I seems that the conclusion is that if you've got a Classic (or similar low
performance computer) you should go for an external harddrive. On other
machines your machine's performance falls of course, but hopefully you won't
notice it as much as with the Classic.

Subject: CopyDoubler 2.0.1 Updater
Date: Thu, 19 Aug 93 16:42:57 PST
Organization: Fifth Generation Systems
About this updater:
This program updates CopyDoubler 2.0 to version 2.0.1. Instructions for updating
are included with the updater.
This updater does not update CopyDoubler 1.0.x, CopyDoubler 2.0 Lite or the
CopyDoubler 2.0 Demo. A separate updater is available here for CopyDoubler 1.0,
CopyDoubler 1.0.1A, and CopyDoubler 2.0 Lite. We recommend that all users of
CopyDoubler 2.0 upgrade to this version as it fixes some important bugs.
CopyDoubler 2.0.1 Changes:
* Fixed a compatibility problem where CopyDoubler would not perform a copy if
Apple's PowerTalk (AOCE) or Personal File Assistant software is installed.
* Fixed a bug where CopyDoubler would compress invisible files when compressing
while copying.
* Fixed a bug where there was a delay of up to five seconds when invoking a
scheduled copy via the keyboard if the current application is not the Finder.
This delay has been eliminated.
* Fixed a bug where files on a hard disk could get deleted when drag copying a
blank floppy disk onto another floppy disk.
* Fixed a bug where CopyDoubler was trying to handle copying to and from MFS
formatted disks and producing an error. The Finder should now handle all copies
to and from MFS disks.
* Fixed a bug where an application's reference in the desktop file wasn't always
getting deleted when that application itself was deleted by the user.
* Fixed a bug where copying files between floppies could produce a "file already
exists" error.
* Fixed a bug where the Mac could crash if a CopyDoubler scheduled copy executes
while the desktop file was being rebuilt.
* Fixed a bug where the same file/folder could be added multiple times to a
scheduled copy.
* Fixed a bug which could cause the Mac to ask the user to reinsert ejected
floppy disks when a copy was invoked, even if the copy did not involve the
ejected floppy.
* Fixed a bug where the progress window could be drawn incorrectly on a Mac with
multiple monitors.
* Fixed some minor cosmetic/user interface issues in the Schedule Setup dialog.

Welcome!
This program patches the following versions of CopyDoubler to CopyDoubler 2.0
Lite:
o CopyDoubler* 1.0 (AutoDoubler version)
o CopyDoubler* 1.0.1A (AutoDoubler version)
o CopyDoubler* 2.0 Lite

Subject: crlf.sit.hqx
Dear Moderator:
Attached please find a Sit&Hqxed file of CRLF.
CRLF is a drag & drop application which performs
the conversion of CR(Mac), LF(Unix) and CRLF(PC) files. It
auto-detects the end of line code of the file which was
dropped and converts to the desired file type. Once you
have set up the preference, you will rarely need to make
any interaction with CRLF later.
CRLF converts the file "in place". The filename stays the
same before and after the conversion. You will notice that
it was converted just by looking at the icons. You can
set up these icons by specifying the creator for each type
of output file.
Also, CRLF is capable of dealing with Japanese text, unlike
some other similar utilities.
This is a freeware.

Subject: util - DeHQX 2.0.1
DeHQX v2.0.1 is an application to decode BinHex 4.0 encoded documents.
It will ignore all headers and comp.binaries.mac part seperators,
handles multiple encoded documents in one file, or split across multiple
files, decode files or folders of files. It runs happily in the background
with little affect on foreground processes. Its not all that fast, so
just drop the files on DeHQX and then ignore it and they will be magically
decoded.
This version corrects an incompatibility with AppleScript. Hopefully I haven't
added any new bugs, I haven't looked at this code in years. I strongly
recomend you look at StuffIt Expander if DeHQX is any use to you, since it
does most of what DeHQX does, and a lot more (and its free too).
DeHQX is free for any use (except you can't resell it). The source for
DeHQX 2.0.0 is available, I haven't updated it because the changes were
very minor.
Enjoy,
Peter.

This file allows people with Enigma 2.1 to upgrade to Enigma 2.1a. You must
already have Enigma 2.1 to take full advantage of this upgrade. If you don't
already have Enigma 2.1 download the file Enigma21a-all.
This will upgrade only the freeware version of Enigma. Registered users should
have no need to upgrade unless they use limited DES alot. If you are a
registered user and feel this upgrade would be of benefit write me at
the usual address. Anyone registering after 10/31/93 will receive a full
DES version of Enigma 2.1a
I am releasing Enigma 2.1a to fix a somewhat significant but cosmetic bug.
There is no need to download this version if you already have Enigma 2.1
and are satisfied with it.
The bug is triggered if you drag and drop more than a single file onto Enigma
with "Remember Key" selected as an option. The program will erroneously tag
all files after the first one as being encrypted with full DES [they are NOT!].
Later when you decrypt such files you may get a warning about this fact.
The warning can be ignored and the file will decrypt properly. As a bonus I have
also made the warning dialog that comes up for an incorrect key much clearer.
Let me repeat, the files tagged as full DES are NOT encrypted with full DES.
This version does not (and can not due to US export law) contain code to
implement full DES. The bug was in the code that determined what file type
to assign. Encrypt a file both ways, you will see they are identical.

The following is the public press release for Enigma 2.1
----------------------------------------------------------
Enigma 2.1 is an application which can provide near absolute
protection for your sensitive documents and applications. By
downloading this application you can encrypt files using a limited
version of the Government Standard DES algorithm. For only $15
this can be upgraded to the full DES standard (US and Canada only).
If you would prefer your neighbors not see your accounting data,
your co-workers not see your performance appraisal, or your
competitor see your trade secrets then Enigma is an application you
will find very valuable.
Since version 2.0 Enigma has supported vaults which are like
very securely locked file cabinets. Multiple files are stored in
them. Files can be added, deleted, renamed, and extracted at any
time. Security is much enhanced because filenames and lengths are
protected by encryption in addition to the contents. No other
free or shareware encryption program offers the flexibility of
Enigma vaults.
Version 2.1 contains user interface upgrades and bug fixes to Enigma 2.0.
The primary features added to version 2.1 are:
- Vaults now display the file size along with the file name
- Vaults can now be compacted, improving disk space efficiency
- There are now options which will prompt the user to confirm dangerous
operations
- The annoying crash when an incorrect key was entered has been eliminated
- Cool Color Icons
- You can now extract files from vaults by double clicking on the file name
in the vault window.
Enigma 2.1 remains fully compatible with previous versions of Enigma. If you
possess a version of Enigma prior to Enigma 2.1 I recommend this upgrade (VERY
recommended if you have a version older than 2.0).
Enigma 2.1 requires system 7.0 or later along with about 512K of memory and 200K
of disk space. Documentation enclosed specifies ordering information for a
system 6 or earlier compatible version, but the vault features are unavailable.
Included with the package is a program that overwrite and delete files so they
can not be recovered with a data recovery program such as Norton Utilities
(Enigma can also do this automatically if you request it).
Enigma 2.1 in this limited form is completely free. No shareware guilt.

Subject: enigma21a-all
This is the complete Enigma 2.1a release. If you already have Enigma 2.1
look for a file called enigma21a-upgrade for a shorter download.
Registered users have no need to upgrade unless you do most of your work with
the limited DES mode.

From: jcstevens@mortimer.atl.ga.us
Subject: MacEncrypt 2.0
MacEncrypt 2.0 is a major upgrade to MacEncrypt 1.01, the drag and drop
encryption program for the Macintosh.
MacEncrypt will allow you to encrypt files using the "Data Encryption
Standard." Encrypted files can only be used if you know the password.
Groups of files can also be encrypted into an encrypted archive.
MacEncrypt can be placed on the desktop next to the trash can and files can
simply be dropped on top of it to be encrypted.
Features added with this release include:
o A single executable that runs on all Macs. Color will be used on color Macs.
o Archives. Multiple files can be archived in a single archive file with a
single password.
o Reusable passwords. Multiple files can be encrypted or decrypted with a
single password. Previous versions required that you retype the password for
each file.
o File shredding. Files encrypted with previous versions of MacEncrypt were
susceptible to viewing with low-level disk editing programs if the encrypted
files were kept on the same disk. "Extra Security" is now an option. This
feature will overwrite the place on disk where the encrypted file used to be
so that it will never be readable by anything.
o Archived items can be left or deleted after archiving.
MacEncrypt is shareware. The shareware fee is $10.00. The program
continues to be supported, developed and improved. Registered users are
informed of free upgrades. Site licenses are also available.

This is version 1.3 of Macify, a UNIX-end program to make your Mac downloads
turn out right. This version also includes a Mac program that does the
same thing.
It will convert between UNIX newlines and Macintosh end-of-line characters
(control-M, hex 0D). Direction of conversion (UNIX -> Mac, or Mac -> UNIX)
can be specified at the command line, and thus files can be converted
both directions.
This is useful if your UNIX -> Mac downloads, or uploads, of text files
are failing miserably. White Knight has a tendency to do this, and other
comm programs may as well.

Dear Netters,
Many people have asked on the net about converting, Word, Pagemaker,
Wordperfect, and IBM-MAC compatibilities. I recentally asked MacLink/PC what
are its new translation formats for version 7.0. Remember all codes, fonts,
styles, and graphics are preserved when you translate from program to program.
Also, all you need is a Din Serial port on your Mac to connect with an RS 232
9 or 25 pin IBM serial port (i.e. no SuperDrive is necessary to run
MacLink/PC if you use the cables and terminal emulation). Dayna's DosMounter
3.01 is also included.
I recentally got the letter in response from MacLink/PC saying they have
expanded their compatibilities. Below is a list only of the most recent
software compatibility additions (August 1992). They also are compatible
with earlier versions of the same software.

mcvert converts among Macintosh file formats used for file interchange,
including BinHex 4.0 (.hqx) and MacBinary (.bin). mcvert is written
in C and runs on many popular UNIX boxes. See mcvert.1/mcvert.man
(the man page) for program details. See README for how to build mcvert.
Please replace mcvert-214.shar with mcvert-215.shar, which follows.
It appears that mcvert-214.shar had long lines wrapped, which damaged
the archive's integrity; and when extracted, an invalid C file was
created. Now all lines in the archvie are 80 characters or less (tab
counts as one character).

NAFF is a no-frills, quick-and-dirty utility for converting between Mac,
Dos and Unix text file formats. Just drag the file(s) you wish to convert
over the NAFF icon, select the conversion required and the characters to
be added to construct the output file name(s) and let it go....
NAFF runs in the background under System 7 (which it requires), but in
any case is reasonably fast, so it should not often need to be
backgrounded, unless you have very large, or very many files to convert.
Double-clicking the NAFF icon will present an input file selection box
immediately for conversion of a single file.
Output files are in MacWrite text file format, still the lowest common
denominator format and readable by any text editor/word processor.
This program is free. Distribute it as you like, but only with this
documentation.
I've discovered that it has made its way across the Atlantic
by itself, and since the earliest version I released was
flawed I wanted to make sure the corrected one was the one
people could get hold of.
So here is the corrected NAFF.

This prerelease version of RIPEM Mac is available for public beta testing.
RIPEM Mac is a public key based cryptosystem aimed at providing privacy
and authentication capabilities for email users. RIPEM Mac offers encryption
(for privacy) and authentication (or digital signatures for origin
verification) using a hybrid RSA/DES approach as specified by the Internet
Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM) standard. Also supported is an extended triple
DES encryption mode for extra security.
RIPEM Mac is compatible with the emerging Internet PEM standard, including
support for public key certificates providing interoperability with various
PEM implementations such as TIS/PEM and COST PEM available for many
platforms.
RIPEM Mac supports direct encryption/decryption from within BBEdit via BBEdit
extensions and from within most text editors and mailer programs via QuicKeys
and the clipboard. Although oriented towards the protection of electronic
mail, RIPEM Mac supports file encryption as well.
RIPEM Mac is format compatible with Mark Riordan's RIPEM, providing
cross-platform compatibility with many UNIX platforms (incl. SunOS, HP/UX,
NeXTStep, AIX, ULTRIX, Mach, Convex) and MS-DOS platforms for which RIPEM is
available.
RIPEM Mac is licensed to you free of charge for non-commercial purposes.

Get this if you have no way to download the .sit (or .sit.hqx)
file: this file can be used on an UNIX machine by universally available
UNIX tools to create a Macintosh disk containing a Mac <-> UNIX
communication program. We have been reported some problems in the use
of this file, but if you succeed to perform the unreliable operation
only once, you'll get a reliable communication path from the Macintosh
(with a 1440k disk drive) and an UNIX machine with a 3.5" floppy disk
drive: we've received success reports from users of many kinds of
workstations including SPARCstations, IBM RISC/6000, NeXTstations and
Sony News. (There is also a way to do that from MS-DOS, see later).

NEW FEATURES IN VERSION 1.0.3:
-----------------------------
o The TimesTwo(tm) Extension automatically mounts removable media like
SyQuest an
Bernoulli cartridges, Magneto-Optical and Floptical devices (please see the
section "Increased Support for Removable Media" in the TimesTwo Addendum for
more information and instructions on installing the Extension).
o Automatic free space adjustment (please see the section "Understanding How
the Finder Reports Space Used and Space Available" in the TimesTwo Addendum for
more information).
o Greater flexibility for "Hot" installations - Users of automatic compression
utilities such as AutoDoubler and More Disk Space no longer need to decompress
files before installing TimesTwo as long as there is at least 10% free space on
the hard disk.
Please see the TimesTwo Addendum which is included in your update package for
additional information on the new features in version 1.0.3d.
BUG FIXES IN VERSION 1.0.3d
--------------------------
Several hard drives were found to have problems running with a blind driver
installed. Version 1.0.3d now forces these devices to run in polled mode.
These devices are:
Drive Manufacturer Vendor Product
----------------- ------ -------
Western Digital(20 Meg) WesDigtl 1006V-SCS
Western Digital (40 Meg) WDIGTL 1006VSCS
Rodime (20 Meg) RODIME RO652
Rodime (45 Meg) RODIME RO3000T
Rodime (60 Meg) RODIME RO3000S
Rodime (100 Meg) RODIME RO5000S
Sony 3.5 inch MO SONY SMO-C301
Sony 5.25 inch MO SONY SMO-C501
For more information on blind vs. polled, please see the end of this document.
If more than one System folder was present after TimesTwo installation, the
correct one may not necessarily get 'blessed' to boot the Macintosh. This
problem has been corrected.
The Insite Floptical Device is now supported.
System 7 users with file names that begin with a period (.) do not need to
remove the periods before installation.

Subject: [*] TimesTwo (and comparison with other auto compression programs)
There have been some discussions about TimesTwo in the last few days and
here's my impression of the product (I originally intended to comment on
the product earlier but a project deadline kept me from doing this):
First of all, for those of you not familiar with the product, TimesTwo is a
HD formatter which replaces the existing SCSI driver with a driver that
does compression and decompression as data are written and read from the
disk. Since it's operating at the driver level and nearly all programs talk
to the HD through the driver, everything gets "compressed", and
theorectically, this process should be totally transparent (not so with any
other types of compression programs) and there should be no compatibility
problem with those programs (provided the driver is bug-free, of course).
In reality, however, this's not entirely the case (all softwares have bugs
- bug-free softwares are just not humanly possible), although TimesTwo does
fulfill most of its promises. Once installed correctly, TimesTwo does work

Date: Sun, 9 Aug 1992 17:26:16 EDT
Subject: Unsea 1.0 is here
This letter marks the formal release of unsea 1.0. Unsea is a mainframe-
level ANSI C program that removes the self-expanding code from MacBinary
encoded StuffIt(TM) or Compact Pro(TM) files.
Since unsea is ANSI C, you'll have to use an ANSI C compiler (like gcc)
to compile it. (The reason for this is that the only C referecnce book
is the 2nd edition of the K&R book, so I simply couldn't write it
as K&R C code.)
To put it on your system, get the shar file(see below for where) and
delete anything above the line "#!/bin/sh". Then unarchive it, using
"sh <filename>" for UNIX machines or your local shar decoder for other
machines. Then follow the instructions in "unsea.txt" and "Makefile"
to compile the program.
The newest version of unsea will always be available on f.ms.uky.edu,
in the /pub/mac/unix directory, as well as anyone who is on the MacGifts
list that mac.archive.umich.edu runs.
Feel free to send any questions you have about unsea to me at
rankin=irc@ms.uky.edu, rankin=irc@ukma.BITNET or rankin=irc@ukma.UUCP.

From: jjw7384@ultb.isc.rit.edu (Jeff Wasilko)
Subject: Batch Unbinhexing/Unstuffing (SUMMARY and SOURCE)
Quite a while ago, I requested info on batch un-binhexing/
un-stufing software available for the mac. I received a few
replies about this, all of them but one suggesting a solution
centered around a mainframe. One person suggested that Ray Lau's
commercial version of Stuffit might do batch work.
What I found was a trio of programs from the archives at
sumex-aim.stanford.edu in the /info-mac/unix directory. The
combination of these three programs allow almost-batch operation
(I'll get into why it's 'almost' later).
The three programs are:
-rw-r--r-- 1 macmod info-mac 54554 Jan 16 18:18 mcvert-15.shar
mcvert converts a .hqx (BinHex 4.0) file to a .bin (MacBinary
file) that can be read by unsit. This program allows wildcard
operations. Additionally, mcvert will unpack PackIt files.
Files in: *.hqx
Files out: *.bin (generally *.sit.bin)
-rw-r--r-- 1 macmod info-mac 26067 Jan 1 1989 unsit.shar
unsit will decompress .sit.bin (MacBinary Stuffit files)
I am enclosing a new version of unsit that Allen sent me to
allow input from MacBinary files. Previously, it was only
possible to input from macput/macget formatted files. The new version
also adds compatiblity with Stuffit 1.5.1 and the new HMF
folder scheme.
At present, unsit can only output files in macput/macget format,
but the author Allan Weber (weber%brand.usc.edu@oberon.usc.edu)
said that he may add the option to output directly to MacBinary format.
Files in: *.sit.bin
Files out: foo.rsrc, foo.data, foo.info
-rw-r--r-- 1 macmod info-mac 4184 Jan 1 1989 macbinary.shar
macbinary (macbin) converts macput/macget type files to
MacBinary files. This allows easy downloading with progams
such as Kermit or ZTerm.
macbin does NOT support wildcards, so this part of the
conversion must be done manually.
Files in: foo.rsrc, foo.data, foo.info
Files out: foo.bin (Unstuffed and in Binary format)
The combination of programs works very well and is extremely fast
on our vax, especially when comparied to Stuffit's performance on
a Plus.
Since this process requires the use of three different programs,
I'm writing a shell script to tie everything together. When I get
it running, I'll send it along too.
I'm including a new version of unsit that reads macbinary files.

The following is from "ReadMe on Macintosh".

Subject: UULite1.5 Release for the Macintosh
I am pleased to announce the release of UULite version 1.5 for the
Macintosh. UULite is the fastest, most powerful and easiest to use
smart uudecoder available for the Macintosh.
*This release, version 1.5, is more than 500% faster at
smart decoding than all previous versions.
UULite is a highly optimized, single-pass, disk based uudecoder/
encoder. Because it's disk based, it's never necessary to
adjust its memory partition to handle any file -- no matter how
large. And because of its unique smart decoding algorithm,
UULite is never fooled by non-standard "--cut here --" lines.
Version 1.5 has the following features:
* One-step "Smart" uudecoding:
- Multipart file decoding with automatic article header/footer
removal - no manual editing required
- Source file may contain multiple output files,
e.g., the source file may contain any number of gif files: all
will be decoded
- Configurable "Drag and Drop" decoding of any number of files
(System 7 required)
- "Super Smart" uudecoding for problem files.
- File Merge and Decode for decoding images from multiple input
files for news readers that don't support appending on the fly
- Straight File Merge for merging text files
* One-step uuencoding:
- Auto file splitting to simplify Usenet posting
- Auto file description insertion in first or all encoded parts.
* Smart automatic file Type and Creator stamping - user configurable
* Manual file Type and Creator editing on any file
* UNIX To Mac text conversion
* Mac To UNIX text conversion
* Help

Now the time has come. The version control tool Voodoo is
available. Voodoo is the successor of Revisionist and is the
first real version control tool for the macintosh. A lite version
of Voodoo will be distributed on a shareware basis.
The package included contains Voodoo 1.4 together with a
readme document and a manual.
Voodoo allows both variant and revision control, and it
manages not only variants and revisions of single files, but
of a whole software project (multi files, multi users,
multi variants, access rights, ...).
The tool offers a neat graphical user interface and is not only
suitable for mere source code control but can handle all
different kinds of files with amazing compression rates
(typical size of delta between arbitrary files 5% -
no matter whether the files are plain text or any other
documents - e. g. MSWord, WriteNow, Canvas, ...).
Contrary, if you try to manage non-text-files with Projector
or SCCS you will not get any space reduction.
Voodoo differs from previous source code control systems in its
orthogonal approach to version management. This means that for
every component of a project hierarchy you can not only store
its revision history but also different variants of the same
component. For a more detailed explanation I'd like to refer
you to the paper on orthogonal version management, which is
included with the application in the Voodoo package.

This is a small rewrite of xbin I have been using for months with no
ill effect. When invoked with "xbin -b" it creates MacBinary (.bin) files
instead of macput (.rsrc,.data,.info) files. There is a new man page, and
even a shell script. Using the shell script, you can "xbinary *" in a

This is the first Zip utility for the Mac that actually has a Mac

comprised of roughly 23,000 personal computers which link with one another
via modems to exchange messages and private email.
